Orange County homeowners, we hate to be the bearers of bad news but… Property Taxes are due this Wednesday! Out of checks? Don’t worry: the county now allows you to pay your property tax bill by credit card (imagine those frequent flier miles!) or debit (with no extra fees for the debit). While few people enjoy paying taxes, the numbers surrounding current OC property taxes are interesting. And appear to be a sign of an improving economy.

According to Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich, payments for the first OC property tax installment for fiscal 2012-13 (due back in December) were up slightly from previous years (98% collected) and payments on this second installment (due this Wed) were running 1.5% ahead of a year ago — with 6,500 more bills paid. This means that Orange County collected $144 million more in property taxes vs. last year through April 3 – and bills are only $122 higher for the current tax year.

All in all, Freidenrich expects total collections for property taxes to be the best Orange County has seen since the last real estate boom.
